Paternity actions are complex and are similar to dissolution or legal separation actions in that parties to a paternity action may petition for an order of child support and the establishment of a residential schedule.
In all actions dealing with children, it is the best interests of the child that govern court's decisions. Paternity actions are unlike dissolution and legal separation actions in that parties cannot seek an alimony award and the court will not distribute property and liabilities to the parties.
Additionally, a determination of parentage is not necessary in a dissolution or legal separation. My firm has represented mothers and fathers in a variety of paternity situations throughout the years.
